Facing Uncertainty in a World Gone Slightly Mad: A Call to Presence and Purpose

Writer: David CicerchiDavid Cicerchi

How do we face a world that seems to have gone a little mad? There is so much disruption, so much uncertainty, and so much change. The institutions we once thought were stable are being challenged and, in some cases, dismantled. It can be unsettling, even frightening.

For many, it feels as if the very fabric of our culture—our commitment to inclusivity, dignity, and rights—is being questioned. Those on the margins may feel particularly vulnerable, as if their very existence is at risk. Whether or not these fears materialize, the emotional impact is undeniable. Overwhelm is real, and it’s affecting people everywhere.

So how do we respond? Some choose to focus solely on their immediate world—their families, their daily lives—attempting to shut out the chaos. Others feel compelled to fix everything, to throw themselves into activism, signing petitions, protesting, and dedicating their lives to addressing systemic issues.

Yet neither extreme—closing off from the world or attempting to shoulder its burdens entirely—ultimately works. Avoidance denies reality. We are not separate from the world; what happens around us inevitably affects us and those we love. Hiding away stunts our own evolution, preventing us from becoming who we are meant to be.

On the other hand, trying to fix everything is equally unsustainable. While committed individuals and groups can indeed bring change, no one can single-handedly solve all the world's problems—at least not in the short term. Climate change, AI’s rapid evolution, global poverty—these are vast, complex challenges that no single effort can immediately resolve.

This is where Unique Self Coaching, as formulated by Dr. Marc Gafni and Claire Molinard, can help. Unique Self Coaching enables you to find what’s yours to do, which fills you with aliveness and a sense of grace to get through any challenge.  There is a response-ability that is a function of your unique perspective and unique quality of presence, and there is a set of gifts that only you can give in your circle of intimacy and influence.

A Different Approach: Presence and Inquiry

Instead of retreating or overextending—functions of the Separate Self and True Self—what if we took a different approach—Unique Self?

1. Take It In

Allow yourself to fully experience the emotions that arise. Let your heart break. Feel the contractions, the frustration, the grief. Be present with what is happening inside you. Don’t avoid, numb, or distract yourself. Simply breathe and allow yourself to be with it.

2. Ask Yourself: What Do I Care About Right Now?

In the midst of uncertainty, connect with what truly matters to you. Is it love? Is it the well-being of future generations? Is it using your voice? There is no right or wrong answer—only what is real for you in this moment.

3. Hold Yourself with Compassion

Imagine treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a dear friend. What if you allowed yourself to soften, to be held in compassion, to breathe into that tenderness? What shifts when you do?

As we hold ourselves with compassion, something remarkable happens. The tightness begins to loosen. Fear starts to dissolve, or at least soften. And in that space, a new awareness emerges.

4. Rest in the Mystery That Holds Us

We are not separate from the vast, interconnected field of existence. The same force that moves galaxies moves within us. Every place we fall, we fall into the right place.  Every detour is part of the destination.

We are held, always.

Every breath we take is a breath with the Cosmos. Every movement we make is a dance with the Mystery.

And that mystery? It loves us madly. It looks through our eyes, feels through our hands, beats within our hearts. It longs to express itself through us, to offer gifts that only we can give.

  1. Listen for What Is Yours to Do

From this place of deep presence, ask yourself: What does Reality need from me right now?

Listen.

Maybe an image, a thought, a sensation arises. Maybe a quiet knowing emerges. Whatever it is—that is yours to do right now. Not out of obligation, but out of resonance with your Unique Self’s calling. Out of alignment with the very pulse of evolution moving within you.

When you give your unique gift in your own sphere of influence, you shift the entire Field. Your actions ripple outward in ways beyond imagination. And you can rest in the knowing that your life is well-lived—not because you’ve done everything, but because you’ve done what is uniquely yours to do.

Each moment is a new opportunity to step into your Unique Self. It’s an ongoing journey—one that deepens, clarifies, and brings you into greater union with the mystery that has conspired for 13.8 billion years to emerge as you—right here, right now.

So breathe. Listen. And do what is yours to do.
